We, the missionary Benedictines of St. Ottilien, are shedding the light of the Gospel at Kumily from 1987 through St. Michael’s Benedictine Monastery. It is the first Eastern Oriental community of the Missionary Benedictines of St. Ottilien.
The Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien (Missionary Benedictine) community in Kumily (India) owes its existence to an Indian secular priest, Rev.Fr. Zacharias Kuruppacheril in the year 1982. Seeing the plight of so many orphans and poor children, he built a home for them, where they could attend or learn a trade. The Orphanage “Don Bosco Bhavan” is its first and primary apostolate, within a couple of years, the orphanage grew from humble beginnings into a well-established ‘formation center for poor and orphan boys and young men. A new chapter in the history of Angel Valley Monastery began when the community decided to join the Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien in the year of 1987.
The monastery was recognized as a Religious Domus in 1991. It was raised to the rank of a simple priory in 2000. With the purpose of expanding our presence and being light for many, the community founded a new monastery at Malom, Kasargod. 18th General Chapter of the Congregation of St. Ottilien granted the permission to raise the simple priory to the rank of a conventual priory. At present Fr. John Kaippallimyalil OSB is the Prior.
