March 31, 1962 was a red-letter day in the history of the Congregation of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate. The Congregation was then entrusted with the first Mission territory outside Kerala, called the Ordinariate of Chanda. Members from all the then existing three provinces were sent to work in the new mission area under the leadership of Very Rev. Fr. Januarius CMI. Mar Thoma Region was formed on 7th November 1964 with Very Rev. Fr. Januarius CMI as the Regional Superior. In 1978 it was raised to a Province as Mar Thoma Province, Chanda. In 1999 Chanda diocese was divided and the diocese of Adilabad came into being. Later on Mar Thoma Province, Chanda was bifurcated into two: Mar Thoma Province, Chanda remained the same with its territory in Maharashtra and newly emerged unit which was named Mary Matha Vice-Province with its territory in Andra Pradesh on September 2008. The Territory of the Province comprises of all the districts in Telangana and Andra Pradesh. 10 MARY MATHA VICE-PROVINCE In 2017, the second session of the IV Ordinary Provincial Synaxis (August 23-26, 2017) through its 42nd resolution requested the change of place name of the province from Bellampalli to Hyderabad, which was approved by Very Rev. Fr. Paul Achandy, the Prior General with the consent of the General Council on 20th September 2017. Hence, the present name of the province is Mary Matha Vice-Province, Hyderbad.
